COBIT 2019 Foundation: governance of information and information technology (IT) in an organisation

General information about the COBIT 2019 product

The COBIT 2019 methodology, released in December 2018, extends the capabilities of the previous product COBIT 5, offering an integrated view of the governance and management of information technology within the organisation. In addition to describing processes and information requirements, the updated governance and management model contains recommendations on organising such important elements as organisational structure, organisational culture, recommended competence levels for employees, and other elements. The previously existing elements of the methodology have also been changed to reflect the demands of the time: the digital transformation (digitalisation) of organisations and society.

Goals of the COBIT 2019 Foundation course

The course «COBIT 2019 Foundation», lasting 2 days (20 academic hours, basic version) or 3 days (24 academic hours, extended version), examines the key concepts and principles of the methodology, terms and definitions, and the main components of the model. Completing the course's practical work will make it possible to apply the elements of the model effectively in analysing and improving the organisation's «governance and management system».

Course goals:

• — to form a holistic view of the IT governance system and of the activity of purposefully developing that system;
• — to study the governance architecture and the elements of the COBIT 2019 model
• — to learn to apply the COBIT 2019 model to assess the current state of the IT Governance System and to plan work on its development;

The course programme corresponds to the programme of the authorised course «COBIT 2019 Foundation», and an additional goal of the course is preparation for the international certification exam «COBIT 2019 Foundation».

4. Course duration

The course lasts 20 academic hours (2 days) or 24 academic hours (3 days) — at the clients' choice.

5. Prerequisites

No special knowledge or skills are required for effective learning on the course «COBIT 2019 Foundation». Nevertheless, work experience in the IT industry, as well as management and (or) leadership experience, is welcome.

6. List of knowledge and skills acquired

Having attended this course, you will:

• — understand how the guiding principles and model of COBIT 2019 can help the organisation assess and improve its governance system;
• — know the elements of the COBIT 2019 model and apply in practice the methods of assessing the maturity (capability) of the existing governance system;
• — plan work on developing the governance system and ensure effective control of its implementation.

The course provides a textbook containing the course materials:

• — presentations compiled into a textbook
• — electronic files for completing the practical work

In electronic form a set is provided of methods and tools for conducting an internal audit of the organisation's processes (Self assessment), including:

• — A selection of COBIT 2019 books and previous versions of COBIT
• — A selection of standards used for process audits: ISO/IEC15504, ISO33000, ISO/IEC20000, ISO/IEC27000 and others
• — Sample process regulations, documents and reports
• — A selection of additional literature, articles and webinars on the course topic.
• — Materials for preparing for the certification exam and sample exam questions
